LLM SEO: How to Get Your Brand Cited in AI Answers (2026 Guide)
Quick Answer
LLM SEO is the work of making your brand easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite when they answer a question. In practice it is mostly good SEO plus third-party coverage. Let AI search crawlers reach your pages, publish specific facts that are easy to attribute, and earn mentions on the sites these systems already cite.
What Is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is the practice of improving how often large language models, and the AI search products built on them, cite your pages or name your brand in their answers. Instead of a ranked list of links, the user gets a written answer that may list a few sources, or name a brand without linking to it at all.
The field has several names for largely the same work:
- Generative engine optimization (GEO): the name used in a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal et al., also searched as "GEO SEO".
- Answer engine optimization (AEO): the same idea framed around answer engines rather than lists of links.
- AI SEO, LLM optimization and LLM visibility: broader labels, the last one focused on measuring how often a brand shows up.
Google does not treat any of this as a separate discipline. Its AI optimization guide (published May 2026, updated July 10, 2026) puts it plainly:
"You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities)."
The same guide recommends unique, expert, non-commodity content and technical SEO basics. So if you are wondering what AI SEO is called now, Google's answer is still SEO. What changes is what you measure and which off-site signals deserve more attention.
Why LLM Visibility Matters
In a June 3, 2026 blog post, Google said AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. Those answers change who gets the click. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults and 68,879 searches from March 2025, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.
Being the cited source is associated with better numbers. Seer Interactive's November 2025 update, covering 3,119 queries across 42 organizations, found that organic CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell from 1.76% to 0.61%, while brands cited in an AI Overview got 35% higher organic CTR and 91% higher paid CTR than brands that were not cited.
LLM SEO vs Traditional SEO
The two overlap heavily, because the same crawlable, useful pages feed both. The differences are in the output, the crawlers involved and how you measure success. Our guide on whether press releases help SEO covers the classic ranking side.
| Factor | Traditional SEO | LLM SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A high position in a list of results | Being cited as a source, or named, inside a written answer |
| What you win | A click from the results page | A source link, a brand mention without a link, or both |
| Crawlers | Googlebot, Bingbot | The same, plus AI search agents such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot |
| Off-site signals | Backlinks and brand authority | Coverage on third-party sites that AI answers already cite |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks and CTR per keyword | Citations and mentions per prompt, platform and date, since answers change between runs |
How LLMs Find and Choose Sources
AI systems know about brands in two ways: training data collected before a model is released, and live retrieval, where the product searches the web while writing an answer and cites what it finds. Citations come from retrieval, and retrieval works from pages you can improve today.
ChatGPT search
OpenAI's help article on ChatGPT search says the feature "leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners", rewriting a question into targeted queries. The same article says referral links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. OpenAI's bot documentation separates OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces websites in ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which crawls content that may be used for training.
Perplexity and Claude
Perplexity's crawler documentation says PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity. It is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." Anthropic's help center draws a similar line between ClaudeBot, which collects training data, Claude-SearchBot, which indexes content to improve search results, and Claude-User, which fetches pages for user questions.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search. Google's AI features documentation (updated December 10, 2025) says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary".
Google-Extended has a narrower job. Google's common crawlers documentation says it controls use of content "for training future generations of Gemini models" and "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal." To stay out of AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google points instead to nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, or an opt-out toggle in Search Console.
Bing and Microsoft Copilot
According to a September 2023 Bing Webmaster blog post, Bing has no separate AI crawler; the NOCACHE and NOARCHIVE meta tags control how content is used in answers. A May 6, 2026 Bing Search blog post goes further, describing the index moving from "which pages should a user visit?" toward "what information can an AI system responsibly use", favoring clearly attributed, verifiable facts.
How to Do LLM SEO
Six steps cover most of the work. None of them needs a special file, a new markup type or a separate AI version of your site.
1. Check AI crawler access
Start with robots.txt and any bot rules in your firewall or CDN. A blanket block on every AI bot can remove you from AI search answers, not just from model training. The table summarizes each company's own documentation, checked in September 2026; rules change, so recheck before editing.
| Bot or control | Company | Job | Effect of blocking |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | ChatGPT search | Not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though pages can still appear as navigational links |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Training data | Opts out of training only |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | User-initiated actions | OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Perplexity search, not model training | Perplexity says it respects robots.txt |
| Perplexity-User | Perplexity | User requests | Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt rules |
| Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Search results | Anthropic says it may reduce your site's visibility |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Training data | Controls training data collection |
| Google-Extended | Gemini training | Does not affect Search inclusion or ranking, and does not remove you from AI Overviews or AI Mode | |
| NOCACHE and NOARCHIVE | Microsoft Bing | Meta tags instead of an AI crawler | NOCACHE limits answers to URL, title and snippet; NOARCHIVE keeps the page out of answers and training |
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. If you object to model training, you can block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended while leaving OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot allowed.
2. Write extractable facts, quotations and statistics
The best evidence here is the GEO paper by Aggarwal et al. (KDD 2024), which tested nine content methods and reported that GEO methods "can boost visibility by up to 40%", with results varying by domain. On the paper's GEO-bench benchmark, measured by position-adjusted word count, adding quotations raised visibility by 41%, adding statistics by 32% and citing sources by 28%.
In the paper's tests on live Perplexity.ai, quotation addition improved visibility by 22% on word count and statistics addition by 37% on subjective impression. The authors also found that citing sources lifted the visibility of lower-ranked, fifth-position sources by 115.1%.
Treat these numbers as a direction, not a formula: the paper dates from 2023, and Google's AI optimization guide lists AI-specific rewrites as a misconception. The lasting lesson is editorial. Replace a claim like "industry-leading support" with the real figure, the period it covers and who measured it.
3. Answer the questions people ask
OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT search rewrites a question into targeted queries, so a page that answers the main question and its natural follow-ups gives more of those searches something to match. Put a direct answer under each heading, phrase headings the way people search, cover pricing, alternatives and limits, and date anything that changes.
4. Earn third-party coverage
Muck Rack's "What is AI reading?" report from May 2026 analyzed more than 25 million links from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini across 17 industries. Muck Rack found that earned media made up 84% of AI citations, journalism alone 27%, and paid or advertorial content 0.3%, with earned media ranging from 82% to 89% across editions since July 2025.
Google's AI optimization guide also lists inauthentic mentions as a misconception, so the goal is real coverage from reporters, trade publications, analysts and partners. Our guide to getting featured on the news explains the main routes.
5. Keep one consistent brand name
A mention only helps if it is clearly about you, and a tracker can only count mentions it can match to your brand. Use the same company name, product names and one-line description across your site, social profiles, directories and press materials. Our guide to online presence management covers how to audit those places.
6. Keep technical SEO basics in place
Google's AI optimization guide recommends technical SEO basics alongside its content advice, so the usual checklist still applies: crawlable and indexable pages, descriptive titles, working internal links, and main content that loads without a login.
What Does Not Work
Several popular LLM SEO tactics have little or no support in the primary sources.
llms.txt files
The llms.txt proposal, published by Jeremy Howard on September 3, 2024 on the llmstxt.org site, suggests a Markdown file at /llms.txt that summarizes a site for AI tools. An Ahrefs study of 137,000 domains published June 15, 2026 found that 28% publish the file, 97% of those files got zero requests in May 2026, and no major AI company has committed to reading it. Google's AI optimization guide also says AI text files are not needed to appear in Search.
Special schema, rewrites and chunking
Google's AI features documentation says there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add". Its AI optimization guide lists a focus on structured data, "chunking" and AI-specific rewrites among the misconceptions. Write for readers; a clear page with direct answers already serves both.
Keyword stuffing and planted mentions
Keyword stuffing was among the methods tested in the GEO paper and did not appear among the top performers. Inauthentic mentions are on Google's misconception list too, and they are not the independent coverage that Muck Rack's data points to.
How to Measure LLM Visibility
No single report covers every AI platform, so combine free first-party data with prompt tracking and campaign checks.
Google Search Console
Google's Search Console help pages say clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the normal Performance report under "Web" and cannot be separated. Google's Generative AI performance report, rolled out worldwide on August 31, 2026, shows impressions only for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no clicks, CTR or position, filterable by page, country and device.
Bing Webmaster Tools
Microsoft's AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview since February 10, 2026, shows citations across "Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations", including cited pages and grounding queries, but no clicks. According to the Bing blog, Citation Share, Intents, Topics and Compare views were added in June 2026.
Prompt tracking and referrals
For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, use a tool that runs a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and records which brands and sources appear. Our comparison of the best AI SEO tools sorts the options by job, platform and starting price, and our roundup of AI visibility tools for brands goes deeper on trackers. In analytics, filter for utm_source=chatgpt.com to see the visits ChatGPT actually sends.
Campaign-level checks
For a single announcement, the sharper question is whether the pages that published it show up as sources. A campaign-level AI visibility check for press releases answers that question. Date every check, because the same prompt can return different sources from one run to the next.
Where Press Releases Fit
A press release is not earned media by itself. It puts a dated, factual version of your news on news sites, where reporters and AI search tools can find it. Muck Rack's May 2026 report found that "Press releases appear almost exclusively in industry trend responses, at 3.5 times the rate they appear in best-of queries."
That makes a release a better fit for news that adds to an industry story than for "best X" prompts. Our guides on getting press releases cited in AI search and how to write a press release cover structure and wording.
RedPress distributes press releases to news sites, and every campaign includes a placement report listing the live links. Plans from $279 add a Google ranking report and an AI visibility report that runs search terms built from the release on Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. A citation means one of the answer's sources is a page where the release was published; a mention means the brand is named without a matching source. Every result is dated, because AI answers change between runs.
FAQ — LLM SEO
What is LLM SEO? It is the practice of making your brand easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite. It combines standard SEO, clear factual content and third-party coverage.
Is SEO dead now with AI? No. Google's AI optimization guide still recommends technical SEO basics and unique, expert content. Clicks have shifted, though: Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, so being cited inside the answer matters too.
What is AI SEO called now? You will see generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), LLM SEO and AI search optimization. Google's own AI optimization guide treats it as part of SEO.
What is LLM optimization called? It is also called generative engine optimization, or GEO, the name used in the 2023 research paper by Aggarwal et al. LLM SEO and AEO describe largely the same work.
How do you rank in ChatGPT? Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, since OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Then publish pages with direct answers and sourced facts, and earn coverage on other sites.
Does llms.txt help with LLM SEO? There is little evidence that it does. An Ahrefs study of 137,000 domains found 97% of published llms.txt files got zero requests in May 2026.
Should I block GPTBot? Only if you object to model training. OpenAI says blocking GPTBot opts out of training only, while ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, so you can block one and allow the other.
Can a press release get my brand cited by AI? It can help, but nothing guarantees a citation. Muck Rack's May 2026 report found press releases appear almost exclusively in industry trend responses, so news that adds to an industry story fits best.
Summary
LLM SEO comes down to being a clear, attributable source and a brand that other sites write about. Documentation from Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, Anthropic and Microsoft points the same way.
Key takeaways:
- LLM SEO, GEO and AEO describe one goal: being cited or named in AI answers. Google treats it as SEO.
- Allow AI search agents such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot; GPTBot and Google-Extended control training use.
- Sourced facts, quotations and statistics raised visibility in the GEO paper's tests.
- Earned media made up 84% of AI citations in Muck Rack's May 2026 report.
- Google says AI text files and special schema are not needed, and lists AI-specific rewrites as a misconception.
- Measure with Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, prompt tracking and dated campaign checks.
Bottom line: Treat LLM SEO as SEO plus reputation. Keep your site open to AI search crawlers, state verifiable facts, earn real coverage, and measure citations with dated checks.
