AI Visibility and Generative Engine Optimization for Press Releases
AI answers now sit above and beside search results. RedPress publishes your press release on news sites that answer engines cite, then checks Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to show where your story was cited, where your brand was only named, and where your coverage ranks on Google.
What generative engine optimization means for a press release
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your information easy for AI systems to find, trust and quote when they write an answer. For a press release it comes down to two things: the facts inside the release, and the sites that carry it.
Answer engines such as Perplexity and Google AI Overviews show the pages an answer was built from. When those pages are news articles carrying your release, the answer repeats your published facts and links back to your coverage.
Answers need sources
Search-based AI answers pull live pages and list some of them as sources. A page that is never retrieved cannot be cited.
News sites get retrieved
In the sample report, every cited source was a news site carrying the release, including USA Today, Business Insider Markets, Barchart and The Globe and Mail.
Facts get quoted
Answers repeated the release’s own figures: 1,293,491 users and 63,218,130 activations. Specific, checkable facts are what an answer can lift.
Four AI platforms, five answer surfaces
Every search term is run on each surface after your release is published, and each answer’s sources are recorded.
Google AI Overviews & AI Mode
The AI summary above the results and the conversational AI Mode, with the sources Google shows for each.
ChatGPT
Answers to the same terms. ChatGPT often answers without listing sources, so most of its results are brand mentions.
Perplexity
Numbered sources come with every answer, so a match against your placements is easy to confirm.
Gemini
Google’s assistant. We extract the sources it attaches and match them to your placement list.
Citation vs mention: the difference that matters
Every AI result in a RedPress report is one of two types. Both examples below answer the same search, “sms fast surpasses 29 million users”, which carries a wrong figure.
The answer links to your coverage
One of the sources the AI used is a page where your release was published. The answer rests on your published facts, and readers can click through to the article.
“SMSFAST has surpassed 1.29 million users, not 29 million. The most recent result reports 1,293,491 users and 63,218,130 activations worldwide…”
The cited release let the answer correct the wrong number in the search.
The answer names you without a source
Your brand appears in the answer, but none of its sources are your placements, or no sources are shown at all. The model knows the name, yet nothing ties the answer to your facts.
“It looks like SMS Fast has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 29 million users…”
With no source to check against, the answer repeated the wrong figure.
Inside the SMS FAST AI visibility report
SMS FAST distributed “SMSFAST Surpasses 1.29 Million Users Across Global Verification Platform” on a Growth plan. On July 31, 2026 the report checked 80 search terms built from the brand, the headline and questions such as “what is sms fast”.

The cited sources were usatoday.com, markets.businessinsider.com, barchart.com, theglobeandmail.com, streetinsider.com and economy51.com. On Google, the same coverage held 42 first-page positions, 41 of them at #1.
AI answers are generated per search and can differ between runs, so every result in the report is dated and links to the search so you can repeat it.
How the AI visibility check works
We build the search terms from your release: the brand name, phrases from the headline and the questions people ask about the news.
After distribution, each term is run on Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.
Every source in every answer is compared with your placement list. A match is a citation; your brand named without a matching source is a mention.
The same terms are checked on Google: organic desktop results in the United States with no personalization, recording the position and the publication that earned it.
The results are frozen into your report with the check date and a link to repeat each search.
What makes a press release easier for AI to cite
- Checkable facts up front. Numbers, dates, places and names in the first paragraph give an answer something specific to quote.
- One consistent brand name. Spell it the same way in the headline, body and boilerplate so answers connect the facts to you.
- A headline that states the news plainly. Answers are written for questions, and a plain headline is easier to match to one.
- Coverage beyond your own site. A release that only lives on your website gives an answer one source; news coverage gives it several.

AI visibility FAQ
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often, and how, your brand shows up in answers written by AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It covers two things: answers that cite a page about you as a source, and answers that name you without one.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of making information easy for AI systems to retrieve, trust and quote. Classic SEO aims for a position in a list of links; GEO aims to be one of the sources an AI answer is built from. The term comes from the 2023 research paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”.
Is GEO the same as LLM SEO or AI SEO?
In practice, yes. LLM SEO, AI SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO) and GEO are different names for the same goal: being used and cited when large language models answer a question.
What is the difference between an AI citation and a mention?
A citation means one of the answer’s sources is a page where your release was published. A mention means the answer names your brand, but none of its sources are your placements. Citations are stronger: they tie the answer to your published facts and send readers to your coverage.
Which AI platforms does RedPress check?
Four platforms and five answer surfaces: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. The same search terms are also checked in Google’s organic results.
Can RedPress guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will cite my press release?
No. AI answers are generated per search and change over time, and no distribution service controls them. RedPress publishes your release on news sites that answer engines can retrieve, then measures and dates what the answers actually show.
How is this different from AI visibility tools?
Monitoring tools track a brand across many prompts over months, usually on a subscription. The RedPress report is tied to one campaign: it checks the search terms around your release and matches each answer’s sources against your placement list. If you need ongoing monitoring, see our guide to AI visibility tools for brands.
Why do the numbers change between checks?
Answer engines rewrite their answers for every search and update the sources they draw on. That is why every result in a report carries its check date and a link to repeat the search.
